Radio Art: The art Form of Acoustic Media

Abstract

Radio art today is a dynamically developing acoustic form of media art. The convergence of new media technologies has changed the definition of radio art, expanding the boundaries of this art form to the level of an artistic medium, where the relationship between the artist and the technology, in which the artist appears as an intermediary between broadcasting institutions and the listening public, has become essential. Radio art can be defined in relation to sound art, music, and media art by mapping its changing parameters in the digital age and suggesting that radio is now moving from a disparate «live» event to a «consumable» event, responding to the demands of a segmented audience across multiple platforms. In the article, it is argued that by contextualizing radio art as a form of acoustic media art, we begin to see the blurring of the boundaries between radio art, telematic art with its acoustic elements and the soundscape of cinema and television.
