South Korea’s View on Sino-US Rivalry: Trade War Representations in the Chosun Ilbo and the Hankyoreh
Abstract
The Sino-US conflict puts pressure on South Korea, which cooperates with both states. The article analyzes the South Korean view of the escalating Sino-US rivalry by focusing on news about the trade war in the Korean press. The study carries out a frame analysis of articles from two Korean newspapers with different political orientations: the conservative Chosun Ilbo and the liberal Hankyoreh, which correspond to major ideological divisions in Korean society and elites. The research determines key trends in framing of the US and China, the impact of the trade war on South Korea and its role in this conflict. The article demonstrates that newspapers of different ideological orientations provide different interpretations of the trade war by focusing on some facts and omitting the others. The conservative newspaper describes the violations of the world trade rules by the PRC as the major reason of this conflict, and accuses Beijing of sabotaging the negotiations, while the US actions are framed as a fight for justice and compliance with international norms. The liberal publication is characterized by a critical attitude towards the US and the American-Korean military alliance. The PRC often receives more positive coverage in the liberal Hankyoreh than the conservative Chosun Ilbo. Despite the revealed difference in framing, both newspapers share concerns about the growth of Beijing's power.
