Faith, Horror and Madness: Understanding the Religion of "Other Gods" in the Sunless Sea

Abstract

In this article author analyzes the game Sunless Sea by the indie developer Failbetter Games from the perspective of simulating the relationships between mortal and gods. By using randomness in order to confront the player with partial loss of agency, developers managed to create interesting and perspective model of religious behavior in a single commercial title.
